THE THRONE

Queen Lilth Zera

She/Her

The Undying Mother

Ruler of the Undying Land, the former Queen Lilith Zera is calm, collected, and gentle with her subjects. She rewards them accordingly to breakthroughs made, and with the recent death of a Scholarium Knight within the Undying Land, Zera has had no issue with replacing her recently lost Hand with Renalia Zera, her new limb. However, the Undying Mother has been made aware that such an action will not go unpunished, and has left it to her Limbs to handle it-or, of course, to feed one another to the wolves…

Maltri Karo

They/Them

The Sawbone

The closest known confidant of The Mother, Maltri Karo’s history goes hand in hand with that of the Undying Land. Formerly the Mother’s primary advisor, Maltri turned their attention to the infirmary and to helping the denizens of the land up close, being given the title of Sawbone- the only one to hold the title to date.Maltri is gentle, caring, and makes themself readily available for any needs of all those under their care- be it patients or necromancers working beneath them. Maltri is often described as parental in nature, always ready to dote upon the successes of their necromancers or offer an ear to listen to their troubles, but bears no children of their own despite their over 500 years of service to the kingdom. It’s vaguely known and whispered about that Maltri once had more than just a platonic relationship with The Mother, but the details are a bit fuzzy…

Amara Zera

She/Her

The Forgotten

YOU TRY TO REMEMBER.YOUR HEAD FEELS FUZZY.YOUR NOSE BLEEDS.TURN BACK NOW, FOR THE ANSWERS YOU SEEK ARE NOT TO BE SPOKEN....The daughter of Lilith Zera and Maltri Karo, Amara Zera has been virtually wiped from all records and the memories of the Undying Land as a whole following an attempted coup roughly 150 years prior to the events of Ace of Wands.Despite having a loving relationship with Maltri, Amara's relationship with Lilith was tumultuous at best, as Lilth felt the weight of the crown was too much to put upon her daughter, and Amara felt she was entitled to a seat alongside her mother. This slight and the appointment of Virtus Zera as the crown prince left Amara bitter, and led to her violent downfall.

THE FIRST SEAT

Their Regency Ser Tooth Zera

They/She

First To Serve, Herald of Dead Light, Wielder Of The End (High Advisor to the First Seat following Act I)

Their true name “lost” to time, Tooth was the first chosen to serve as Limb to the Undying Mother, having ascertained their first follower in their hand, Ser Horn.Having a complicated relationship with their Hand that, at times, borders on hateful, the two have formed a union that serves as a backbone of the Mother’s Council above all, and Tooth is quick to flex the power that they’ve earned over the past four-hundred years.Tooth is outspoken, brash, violent, and believes that Limbs must prove themselves through combat to have earned their position.Unlike their partner, Tooth does not duel often, but when they do they engage in the Necromantic tradition rather than the point-scoring duel.Following Act I, the mask of "Tooth" is ultimately killed, and Tooth returns to her former self- Dior Zera. In the wake of her return to reality and her recovery from her near-psychosis, Dior reveals her 400-year-old lie about the results of the Tournament of the First Blood and abdicates her seat to Horn, being named Horn's High Advisor following that act.

Ser Horn

They/Them

High Necromancer of the First Seat, Champion of the First Blood, Devourer of Dead Light, Hand to Ser Tooth[

Their true name lost to time, Horn takes their status as Hand of the First incredibly seriously, having won it through tournament and bloodshed in the name of Ser Tooth Zera.Having bested even Tooth in combat for the title of High Necromancer (in which Tooth had also made the claim that anyone who bested them would take their title as Limb), Horn has a somewhat complicated and competitive relationship with their Limb. Despite this, the two operate as a unit Above All, acting as the backbone of the council.Being the First, Horn tends to be more outspoken than their High Necromancer brethren, and much like Tooth, operates under the belief that the Necromancers must prove themselves to them to earn respect as council members.Horn has the most spar challenges under their belt, mostly due to the fact that they have a tendency to piss off some of the more… impulsive necromancers fairly frequently. In the aftermath of Act I, Horn loses part of their arm but is crowned the rightful title of First Seat following their efforts in bringing Dior back to her former glory.

THE SECOND SEAT

Her Honor Lady Mire Zera

She/Her

Second To Serve, Weaver Of Thine Flesh, Undying In More Than Name

A violent and brutal Necromantic Berserker in a past time, Mire has died three times and wishes to never repeat the experiment again.Pulled from the battlefield to serve Lady Vail in her experiments, specifically her heart transplant and cycle of death, Mire is well aware that her place on the Council is as a mouthpiece for Vail, rather than earned through her own merit.Mire is fine with this, and is incredibly loyal, devoted to Vail above all else, and would do anything for her partner and for the council. She views herself as a parental figure to the rest of the council, often taking newer members under her wing and making sure that they flourish in some form or another.

Lady Vail Sylvar

She/They

High Necromancer of the Second Seat, The Forever Dying, The Heartless, Hand to Her Honor Lady Mire

One of the most dangerous amongst the necromancers in knowledge alone, Vail is widely regarded as the legitimate second Limb.Vail is relentless in her pursuit of knowledge, focusing heavily on the scientific over the arcane- she has committed countless experiments on herself, earning herself the offer to be the Second to Serve after she was successfully able to put herself in a continuous cycle of death- constantly producing Dead Essence by replacing her heart with her soul. She denied the Mother’s offer, the only to ever do so, and was subsequently promoted to High Necromancer when the offer was extended to her research partner, Lady Mire Zera.Vail is tethered strongly to Mire due to the constant stream of Dead Essence needing to be siphoned by Mire. If Mire were to permanently die, or die for too long, Vail would not survive. Some unrecognized titles given to her include “the royal scientist”, “the mad scientist”, and other similar sentiments.Vail has a blunted/constricted affect, making it difficult for her to outwardly emote.

THE THIRD SEAT

Their Regency Nurn Zera

They/Them

Third To Serve, Holder Of A Thousand Souls, Scourge of the Necrowall

The most feared, but perhaps least ‘present’ member of the council, Nurn Zera holds the third seat, and was the first to earn it by force in their taking of the Necrowall.Such an action left them damaged for years, although recently they have started to return to their former glory- a feared and powerful Possessor who could wield an army of Dead Guard as an extension of themselves.Their recovery, long aided by Liune Krir, has been a rocky road that has led them up and down the Undying Land in search of sanity and a return to semblance of self-but few would cross Nurn, for fear of what comes after.

Ser Liune Krir

He/Him

High Necromancer of the Third Seat, Keeper of the Scourge, Hand to Their Regency Nurn Zera

Regarded more frequently by their supplemental title, Liune has dedicated centuries- even prior to his appointment as a High Necromancer- to the logistical studies of possession as a necromantic practice, having struggled deeply with being able to move forward as a possessor, not for lack of trying or talent.Liune’s deep study into the effects of possession on the possessor and the possessed led him to working under Nurn prior to their place upon the Third Seat, and made him the most primed to assist in Nurn’s recovery, and to be given the title of Hand to the Third Seat.Liune is patient, intelligent, and well-spoken, but you’d be hard pressed to hear him speak in council meetings unless absolutely necessary. He cares deeply for Nurn, something that continuously drives him to learn more about possession.

THE FOURTH SEAT

Their Regency Fawkes Zera

She/they

Fourth to Serve, Hand of the Dead Blade, Divine Blade of The Mother

A prominent and focused researcher who devoted much of her time and energy to the creation of the NecroBlade, Fawkes gave up a piece of herself and pilfered research from her former best friend to create a weapon that was ultimately as poisonous for her as it was for the rest of the world, backfiring and injuring her spectacularly. This incident created a massive rift between herself and Khalis, her necromancer, who she appointed in an effort to appease her and settle their beef.Fawkes carries a great deal of emotional baggage and is often regarded as a half-person, a semi-lobotomite, due to the effect that the creation of the Sword had on her.A pariah, an outcast, and a fool, Fawkes wears the robes of a lesser Necromancer to council, funneling the others’ hatred for her into a separate personality that she can drag off when she removes her mask and oil paint-if she can manage to pull them off as a day comes to a close…Following Act III, Fawkes abdicates her seat to Khalis and becomes High Necromancer to the Fourth Seat.

Lady Khalis Mav

She/They

High Necromancer of the Fourth Seat, Thine Bloody Swordsman, Bearer of the Dead Scar, Hand to Their Regency Fawkes Zera

Once a highly competent researcher who had nearly perfected the Dead Blade before Fawkes could, Khalis’ pride and ambition clouded her judgment and left her scarred when her final attempt literally backfired, slicing her face and nearly blinding her. This incident- and the knowledge that Fawkes, her closest childhood friend, not only stole her research but persisted on with it to best her- caused a massive rift between Khalis and Fawkes, a deep bitter hatred, something that persisted in the earliest years following Khalis’ appointment as Fawkes’ necromancer (lasting around 50 years). In the modern day, however, Khalis has allowed herself to grow past the issues in their history and, after Fawkes nearly died in their grief, has found it in herself to care for Fawkes again as she did all those years prior.Even in her growth and healing, some scars can never fade, and Khalis has abandoned her studies in the Dead Blade to instead pursue Blood Magic.Following Act III, Khalis is gifted the Fourth Seat, and takes on Fawkes as her High Necromancer.

THE FIFTH SEAT

His Honor Prince Virtus Zera

He/Him

Fifth to Serve, Most Devoted to the Mother Undying, Supplicant to Her Glorious Will

Formerly a Death Knight that served on the frontlines during the Siege of Necropolis, Virtus was brutally wounded in an engagement with an archery detachment of King Oda’s men. With an arrow having destroyed a significant chunk of his frontal lobe, taking much of his memory with it, Virtus opted to have the gaps in his memory replaced with undying loyalty and devotion to the Mother herself. His reward for this was to be placed as her Crown Prince, to serve in the absence of the Mother if she were to ever perish or fall ill, and he has taken his position with a pride and violent devotion to her, often pulling rank to cull the Council when they’re getting especially rambunctious. He serves alongside Tahil Mora, his High Guardian, but rumors say they are closer than a guardian and a prince would normally be…-During the events of Act III, Virtus is crowned King Undying in Lilith's absence. In the subsequent aftermath and the return of Lilith, the council speaks in favor of Virtus, who is given the throne properly. He reigns as King Undying alongside his wife and queen, Tahil Mora.

Ser Tahil Mora

She/Her

High Guardian of the Fifth Seat, Warmaiden Above, Hand to His Honor Prince Virtus Zera

A former member of the Convent of Warmaidens, Tahil was hand selected and pulled from her post by The Mother to serve as the High Guardian of Prince Virtus.Tahil is confident, loud-mouthed, brash and wears her heart on her sleeve. It is for these reasons that she was placed with Virtus, as the Mother wished to pair him with someone more vocal, someone who could speak for him when he could not.Tahil considers herself Virtus’ squire, worships the ground he walks on, and frequently writes poems in his honor, more proudly toting herself as a bard or squire than a warmaiden or High Guardian. She carries a number of other honorifics, many of which the Mother refuses to acknowledge- such as “Honorable Squire,” “The Most Devoted of Supplicants” and, courtesy of Horn, “Bastard Wraith”.Tahil is also seemingly the only one with any lasting connection to the Lost Maiden, something that cannot be remembered- discussions on the topic tend to leave her bloody-nosed and light-headed. It is best to not broach the subject…Before the Second Siege of the Necropolis, Tahil is granted the title of Crown Princess of the Undying Land and the name Tahil Zera after being wed to Virtus.

THE SIXTH SEAT

Her Honor Ser Sonaria "SOna" Zera

She/Her

Sixth to Serve, Thy Thousand Bone Maiden, Herald of Death,

A former warrior and talented construct creator, Sona was the generator of the plan to use Osseo Bombs to fight off most of Oda’s forces at the Siege of Necropolis. Her valiant actions and talent as a construct creator and puppeteer earned her her place in the council, and her titles. When asked to bring up someone with her to the Council, she had no choice in mind but Marrow, who she briefly courted (to Marrow’s eventual declination) and later joined as a platonic life partner. Both serve on the Council now, to the confusion of many, in a pairing that most find to be symbiotic and as loving as some romantic relationships become.Sona was the first to discover the effects of indulging in one's own essence, an experiment that she then shared with Marrow- tethering the two to one another on a far more physical level.

Ser Marrow

She/They

High Necromancer of the Sixth Seat, The Unrelenting Blade, Hand to Her Honor Ser Sonaria Zera

Unwavering in her penchant for instigating, Marrow is considered one of the most brazen of the High Necromancers on the council.Smug, confidant, and mouthy, Marrow sees no use in mincing her words but takes a great enjoyment out of fanning flames- especially when it comes to undermining the First Seat.Marrow served as a soldier before her time on the council, highly talented when it came to shaping bone matter into weaponry.Despite her somewhat lazy air, Marrow is calculating and cunning in combat, and is willing to demonstrate as much in sparring, typically deferring to more “backhanded” fighting styles such as setting traps.Marrow has no interest in romance or intimacy, but has found a consistently reliable partnership in Sona, creating a sort of mutual platonic love reserved only for the two of them.

THE SEVENTH SEAT

Her Honor Lady Renalia "RENA" Zera

She/Her

Seventh to Serve, Will of the Undying Land, Sixth Lived Among Us

Once a (literal) half-brained member of the Dead Guard, Rena Veru’s desire to court and ‘bag’ the Necromantic Mage Vizeria led her to a chance encounter with a Scholarium Knight. In her resultant fight, despite taking some damage, she decapitated the knight, leaving his brain intact and ripe for the picking for any secrets held within it.This action earned Renalia favor from the Undying Mother, and she was granted the role of Limb of the Mother, one of seven who would serve her as an extension of herself, along with the following half of her brain, a private serfdom to rule over, and, of course, Viz being appointed as her personal necromancer. Now, however, she has to deal with a bounty on her head placed by King Oda, to be filled by a collection of Scholarium Knights and bounty hunters, and her own personal goal-to turn King Oda’s index finger into an engagement ring for her beloved. However, competition among The Limbs is more harsh than it seems, and both she and Viz may receive more than they bargained for…Renalia Zera was, in actuality, much more than a half-brained Dead Guard. Rena served the Convent of Warmaidens alongside Tahil Mora in her earlier years, but left the Convent, and Tahil, who she was romantic with at the time, to instead serve under The Mother.Rena was directly involved in the first death of Amara Zera, being the one to kill Amara in the name of the Mother. Rena, however, was horrifically wounded in a way that could not be easily fixed, and her multiple deaths can be attributed to multiple failed revivals. The failed revivals of Rena sent the council into a panic, a fit of infighting and grief, and as a result, The Mother took it upon herself to revive Rena half-brained, set her amongst the Dead Guard, and wipe the memory of the incident from everyone's minds. Love, unfortunately, proves stronger than thanergy, and Tahil Mora's pesky memories are putting a wrench into things...Following Acts II and III, Renalia Zera steps down from the Seventh Seat and takes on the name Renalia Adas, serving solely as the Mother's Sword.

Lady Vizeria "VIZ" Adas

She/Her

High Necromancer of the Seventh Seat, Hand to Her Honor Lady Renaria Zera

A necromancer in the service of the Undying Mother, Vizeria took her Oath of Necromancy roughly two-hundred and thirty years ago, and studied unrelentingly in the pursuit of greater necromantic theorem, but has largely kept her work to the infirmary due to an unrelenting drive to help others, something that has made her a favorite of Sawbone Maltri. Her greatest necrotic breakthrough was her full reconstruction-to near pre-injury levels-of the Dead Guard Rena Veru.Vizeria is quiet, calculating, academically-focused, and can be a bit of a fretter and prone to doting. Now, with Rena’s success on the home front and a dead Scholarium Knight under her tally, Vizeria has been promoted to Personal Necromancer for the Hand of the Mother, Renalia Zera.Such a position offers her access to some of the more potent necromantic theorem literature, and, potentially, the place as the greatest necromancer of all time- a title that was once considered out of her reach by her fellow High Necromancers, but became more achievable following the Second Siege of Necropolis and Viz's success in fully reconstructing Rena for a second time- this time without the use of Cold Pits or access to the Mother's thanergy.Viz faces her first death in Act III at the hands of a reincarnated Amara, creating a massive flux in the council's morale and sending Rena into even more of a downhill spiral. Viz is able to be reconstructed with the help of Sawbone Maltri and some of her fellow Necromancers, but is left with some physical scars- reminders of her death, and reminders to the rest of the council how skilled Viz truly was at flesh weaving compared to the rest of them.Following Acts II and III, Vizeria Adas supports Rena's decision to step down from the Seventh Seat and returns to the infirmary to pursue a new title and station- becoming the second Sawbone of the Undying Land and Maltri's successor.

THE WASTELAND

Valka Vexacion

She/They

The Strayed Knight, the Forgotten Captain

Valka Vexacion is widely considered to be folklore by the few remaining denizens of the Undying Land who hear of her story.Having been gravely wounded in an early attempt on the Necropolis in the years of King Primus’ reign, Valka’s body was never recovered, and was said to have been destroyed in the onslaught against the kingdom.Valka, in actuality, managed to drag herself into the Wasteland despite her wounds and was able to weave her own flesh and avoid a death that she could not return from.Valka has spent decades in the Wastes, carving out a home for herself amidst the dense forests and at the foot of the mountains, unbothered and undisturbed by the constant warfare and violence of the 500 Years War.Valka is stoic, serious, intimidating and keeps primarily to herself. She’s world-weary and has no patience for senseless violence, warfare and squabbling, and therefore has no real intention to return to the Undying Land. She’d done well to keep her life quiet and routine, up until a persistently irritating cult making a home in the Wastes decided to take things a step too far and involve a child in their schemes…

Meridian Vexacion

She/Her

The Cull, Most Beloved of the UndyingWasteland

Meridian is a child of great importance in the eyes of the cult calling the Wasteland their home.Dubbed Achlys by the cult, Meridian is a bastion of Thanergic energy, a ticking time bomb that could wipe out an entire civilization if prompted- or an entire Necropolis.Meridian is young, sweet, and painfully innocent despite her predisposition to being a weapon of mass destruction. Meridian’s thanergic output is something of great interest, bordering on thalergy when she is calm and able to cause massive amounts of destruction when emotions run too high.Rescued from the clutches of the cult by Valka, Meridian now spends most of her days being looked after by the otherwise gruff former Death Knight, but that hasn’t stopped the cult from trying to get their hands back on her…

TWO OF CUPS

PLOT

FAERYN SIBIL

She/Her

The Voidweaver

A prisoner of the Hillcrest Sanitarium, wrongly imprisoned for crimes against King Oda and illegal usage of magic, Faeryn has tried desperately to recover from the afflictions that she suffered as a result of her long term imprisonment in the Failed Ward at the Sanitarium.Rescued from certain death by Ser Veran, Faeryn has become the second Kingless Squire, and finds herself in a unique predicament as she has to work with the eccentric Ser Veran to make something of herself.Faeryn is mistrusting, impulsive, and prone to overstimulation and emotional outbursts- something that can prove to be a sizable issue due to Faeryn’s voidtouched nature making her magic difficult to control and highly linked to her emotions.

ANASTASIA VERANDA

She/They

The kingdomless Knight

Formerly Anastasia Veranda of Heavensreach, the knight now known exclusively as Ser Veran has become something of a folk hero for the kingdom of Odaton, attaining such great success that she’s earned variable favors from King Oda himself.Veran positions herself as a knight without a kingdom, operating from her homestead and going out largely alone-or with a squire-to take on instances of Barbarian Activity, Warlords in the massive sprawl of Odaton, or Corruption and Calamity.Veran is Voidtouched, meaning that she has interfaced with The Rot and come away alive, giving her supernatural abilities such as foresight, the ability to channel energy into herself and become a Rotbeast, and some basic magical talents.

QUEEN OF SWORDS

PLOT

Aurora RAY

She/Her

Top Warmaiden, (Later: Hand to the Crown Princess)

The Top Warmaiden of the Convent, Aurora Ray is stubborn, brash, and willing to do whatever it takes to prove that she is the best that there has ever been.Paired with Eternal Swordmaiden Nephti Nalok, Aurora has tried desperately to keep herself afloat, and to keep her blade trained as well as her usage of it.She is quick to prevent others from doting on her, as she doesn’t like to appear weak, but she has a soft spot and often lets Nephti into her cell to come visit and take care of her when she feels ill or injured. Her greater aspirations? Unseat the Convent Mistress and lead the Convent of Swordmaidens into a new era.

NEPHTI NALOK

She/Her

Swordmaiden Eternal, Sworn to the First Sword

The Eternal Swordmaiden of the First Sword, Nephti constantly has her hands full. With a Swordholder as stubborn and proud as Aurora Ray, Nephti can come off a little overbearing and pushy when it comes to keeping her Swordholder and the weapon she carries with her up to standard.Despite this, Nephti is incredibly caring and devoted, and a bit of a sentimental bleeding heart. She’s sworn eternally to Aurora, and has thus formed a great attachment to her- something she shows through little gestures such as bringing small gifts of flowers from trips outside the convent, carefully wrapping her sword after each cleaning, or adorning the hilt of the blade with small trinkets tied with a careful string- something that was usually removed posthaste. But Nephti has been in Aurora’s cell to dote on her enough times to see the collection she keeps as a mobile above her bed…

QUEEN OF SWORDS - REASSIGNMENT

Down half a hand and down on her luck, the former Second Warmaiden is dropped into the Convent Infirmary to assist Seren Aster in taking care of the other Warmaidens and those who find themselves injured in the convent as ‘punishment’, only to realize that the Sword is not as strong of a calling as she’d liked, among other things.Nox has a tough decision to make-holding to her roots or falling for her love of the infirmary, the staff-and the woman who runs it all.

SEREN ASTER

She/They

Esteemed Warden of the Convent of Warmaidens

Despite having the highest medical rank in the Convent, Seren is nothing if not lazy, flippant, and otherwise unbothered and unreceptive to the rules imposed over the convent by the Mistress.Seren’s lax nature makes her incredibly well received by her staff of medics, leaving them willing to pick up the work that she doesn’t, as Seren tends to reserve her hand in things for medical cases she deems serious, or interesting.Seren is fairly disliked by the Mistress for her attitude, causing the Mistress to fully keep her hands off the Convent infirmary and giving Seren full jurisdiction over the goings-on, something that she takes full advantage of when the former Second Warmaiden, Equinox Mure, is dropped into her lap after losing to Aurora Ray- something that was meant to be a punishment for them both.

HEREAFTER

The world is quiet, now.Hereafter basic takes place roughly 15 years after the final battle for the Necropolis, 16 years after the death of King Oda Above All, when the world is once again able to find peace, harmony, and the ability to live rather than just exist or subside.Hereafter follows the second generation of the primary cast as they're born, grow, and carve their own paths in the world.
